Welcome to the MVHS Diablos Boys' Basketball!

Mission Viejo High School has developed a winning sports tradition. We won the IA CIF Southern Section Basketball Championship in 2004 and have been very successful in the South Coast League and CIF each year. The Varsity has averaged 20 wins a season, and we have been ranked in the top 10 of Orange County each of the last 5 years. In the past few years, we have sent players to Santa Clara, Point Loma, UTEP, Seattle University, Air Force Academy, Menlo, Pierce College, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and West Point.

 Diablos Basketball Philosopy

The MVHS Diablos Basketball philosophy is based on three major concepts:

  1. Teamwork
  2. Hard Work
  3. Simplicity.

Even though we desire our players to have characteristics such as speed, vertical explosiveness, power, and size we don't include them in our philosophy because they are variables on a high school basketball team and cannot be counted on year in and year out. As coaches we have developed defensive and offensive sets and drills as well as an environment that maximizes the use of the teams three major concepts.

Teamwork:
This is the act of each player and coach doing everything they can to make the team successful. It is also believing in and practicing the team concepts on and off the court.

Hard Work:
This is a hard working, tough, do what it takes attitude. The belief that defense wins games. Players and coaches must work until the job is finished on both ends of the court. NO TAKING PLAYS OFF!!!!

Simplicity:
We don't believe in making things complicated. Players and coaches must stay focused on the basics, trying to be fancy leads to mistakes and turnovers. The teams defense, offense, and drills give each player a specific duty that must be fulfilled for the team to be successful.

Communication is a combination of all three of the team's concepts and is key to making them work. It is important that communication is clear on all levels (coach/player, player/player, coach/coach). We use simple terms that are uniform for the entire team helping make communication clearer. When the team meets the expectations of the three team concepts we will be successful. Each player and coach must buy into and practice our team philosophy. If anyone has his or her own agenda our team cannot and will not be successful.
